Bighorn Canyon National Park is an incredible National Park located in southern Montana. The powerful canyon which was formed by millions of years of water erosion from the blue ribbon Bighorn River will force solitude and peace on you with every step you take on one of the many trails.
Take time and look at all of the layers of earth in the canyon rocks of times when there was a marsh land and an ocean covering the land and really appreciate the time it took to make this canyon. Bighorn Canyon is a hard land where Native Americans 10,000 years ago came and lived off of the water and wildlife the river brought.
Bighorn Canyon is a geologist's dream and an animal lover's paradise. Bighorn Canyon offers a diverse landscape of forest, mountains, upland prairie, deep canyons, broad valleys, lake and wetlands. The wildlife is equally diverse. From the fabulous Pryor Mountain Wild Horses to the majestic Bighorn Sheep, hundreds of bird species and a world class fishery, Bighorn Canyon is truly one of the most significant natural areas in the United States.
There are many things to do at Bighorn National Park including camping, picnicking, boating, fishing, and learning about the history of the area. Bighorn River is one of the finest trout streams in the United States. The Yellowtail Dam created a classic tail water fishery that is cold and clear in the summer and ice free in the winter. Rainbow and brown trout are prevalent.


Facilities: Bighorn Canyon National Park provides many lodging opportunities throughout the park, dump stations, and boat ramps.

Best Time To Visit: Bighorn Canyon National Park is accessible year round.

Fees: An entrance fee is charged.

Accessibility: Some parts in the park are handicapped accessible.

Rules: Remember to keep all pets on a leash, exercise a leave no trace policy, don't feed the animals, there is a 14 day maximum stay limit, during a lightning storm stay away from the rim of the canyon and do not take shelter under tree, and do not feed or approach wild animals.

Directions: To reach Bighorn Canyon National Park from Billings head east out of town on the I-90 for 45.5 miles where you will reach the town of Hardin; turn right on Crawford Avenue and follow it for .5 miles. You will come to State Highway 313 follow it south for 40 miles where you will reach the visitors center.
