Welcome to Washington's Wine Country! This is the land of the rippling hills of the Yakima Valley. Hops, orchards and vineyards bask in the healthy heat of summer days. In sharp contrast to the western slopes of the Cascades and the rain forests of the Olympic Peninsula, this region enjoys more than 300 days of sun each year. Cool nights are perfect for grapes and people alike and humans, at least, can enjoy rafting and inner tubing to escape from the afternoon heat.

Despite the reliable sun, snow melt from the mountains and irrigation from the Columbia River water the orchards and vineyards. It's pretty much common knowledge that Washington is the world leader in apple production. But few people are aware that the Yakima Valley also produces 75 percent of the hops grown in the U.S. Or that this same area is becoming famous for the asparagus, peppers, chiles and specialty foods found at roadside stands and farmers markets. This is the region of Washington to enjoy wine and sun and quality fruit.
