The Okanogan National Forest is located in north-central Washington and extends from the Canadian boundary south to the Methow-Chalan Divide. There is over a million acres of land within the forest. Called the Sunny Okanogan, summers are hot and dry while the winters are famous for clear skies and plenty of snow.
The Okanaogan got its name from an Indian word meaning "rendezvous," applied to the section of the Okanogan Valley where the Indians of British Columbia and Washington often gathered for their annual potlatch.
The Okanogan National Forest offers plenty of outdoor activities. Two congressionally designated wilderness areas provide thousands of remote acres where visitors can find peace and solitude. The Okanogan offers miles of trails to explore by mountain bike, foot or horse, numerous pristine lakes to swim in, and scenic drives including the North Cascades Scenic Highway, the first national scenic highway in the nation. The forest is also a fisherman's paradise full of glacier-fed rivers and streams.
Winter provides a snow-covered playground, with acres and acres available for snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and sledding. Sno-Parks are located throughout the forest offering access to both alpine and cross-country ski areas.
