Flaming Geyser State Park is a 480-acre day-use park with more than three miles of freshwater shoreline on the Green River. The park's most unique feature is its "geysers" (methane seeps). Park activities include whitewater rafting, tubing, and model airplane flying. There is a remote-control, model-airplane flying area in the park. Open lawns are available for softball and other lawn games. A 25-acre open field is available for equestrian use. Other recreational activities are picnicking, hiking, fishing, day use, kayaking, and bird watching. Floating with inner tubes is a popular activity in summer during low-water periods. Caution must be used, especially in the spring, due to cold water and rapid currents. The namesake, the Flaming geyser, and its smaller companion, the Bubbling geyser, are both unique and intriguing features. While only burning 6 to 10 inches high now, in its younger days the Flaming geyser burned several feet high with higher gushes of fire and water. It was even featured in "Ripley's Believe It or Not". Located at the downstream end of the Green River gorge, Flaming Geyser State Park Recreation Area is a popular take-out point for rafters and kayakers enjoying whitewater adventures in the gorge. During summer low-water levels, the park is very popular with people floating on inner tubes, air mattresses, and other floating devices. The Green River is usually one of the top ten steelheading rivers in Washington, adding to our use, especially in the winter months. All Washington State Dept. of Fish and Wildlife fishing regulations apply within the park. Flaming Geyser State Park has existed on this location since the 1920's. Operated as a private park into the 1960's, it fell into bankrupcy. State Parks rescued it from conversion to home development and has operated it as a park ever since. The Flaming Geyser burned significantly higher before the 1960's, and was featured in "Ripley's Believe It or Not." The park is actively looking to obtain an original copy of the Ripley's publication that features the geyser.
