Cowlitz County Historical Museum's mission is to preserve and interpret our regional history for public education and enjoyment. Some of the museum's exhibits include "They came to six Rivers", "Legends of the Cowlitz Indian Tribes" and "Cheholtz and Mary Kiona of the Cowlitz". The newest exhibit is "Hiking the Harmony Trail". It is a collection of photographs by author and naturalist Christine Colasurdo. The exhibit chronicles the evolving landscape of Spirit Lake, a few miles north of Mount St. Helens, through Colasurdo's color photographs and text. Colasurdo has hiked the one-mile trail at Spirit Lake each summer for the past 15 years. In the exhibit, she uses repeat photography (the same view taken at different points in time) to illustrate how much Spirit Lake and its surrounding ridges have recovered in the last two decades.
