Cedar City is the Gateway to the National Parks" with both Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park within only an hour and-a-half driving distance. Cedar Breaks National Monument is just over a half-hour drive located on the western edge of the 10,400-foot-high Markagunt plateau. Cedar Breaks plummets 2,500 feet and opens up three miles of the green alpine meadows to expose shades of red, purple and yellow through the eroded limestone rock formations.
The Tony Award Winning Utah Shakespearean Festival is held annually in Cedar City during the summer and fall. As Festival City USA, Cedar City hosts year-round festivals including the American Children's Christmas Festival, the Canyon Country Western Arts Festival, the Festival Royale, the Utah Neil Simon Festival, the Thunderbird Film Festival and the July Jamboree and classic car show, just to mention a few. The new Heritage Center presents an assortment of plays, symphonies, ballets, art shows and multitude of cultural events and entertainment.
Winter in Cedar City brings the fresh powder of Brian Head Ski Resort. Golf along the red sand stone hills at the Cedar Ridge Golf Course, or join the family of athletes that participate in the Utah Summer Games. For outdoor recreation there is rock climbing, mountain biking, snowboarding, and endless other opportunities.
Cedar City is home to Southern Utah University, which serves as an important center for advanced learning and public service. The University hosts numerous plays, lectures, operas and musicals, as well as NCAA Division I athletic events.
