The Coombs Site at the Anasazi State Park Museum is unique in comparison to many other Anasazi sites in the southwest. It is located near what is considered to be the border of the Anasazi and Fremont cultures. The Fremont were a prehistoric group that occupied most of Utah during the same period. The result is a blending of traits or a prehistoric "melting pot" that is reflected in the artifacts recovered from this site, as well as in the architecture. In addition, elements from other branches of the Anasazi have been identified here, suggesting the presence of an extensive trade network.
The journey to Anasazi State Park Museum is nearly as spectacular as the museum collections. Highway 12 is perhaps one of the most scenic drives in the West, winding 122 miles through Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, over Boulder Mountain within the Dixie National Forest, to the entrance of Capitol Reef National Park.
