Salem, Oregon, as the capital of the state, has a capitol building that is a top attraction for tourists. Built in 1938, it is constructed mainly of Vermont marble, with a tower topped by a burly gold plated pioneer. On each side of the main entrance are large marble sculptures; covered wagons on the west, and Sacajawea's Lewis and Clark on the east.

Another popular attraction is the Mission Mill Village. The 5 acre park has several pioneer houses, a woolen mill built in 1896, a water powered turbine that converts fleece into wool, a machine shop, and the Marion County museum of History, as well as village shops, and a cafe. Picnicking is a popular pastime on the banks of the mill stream.
For an unforgettable day trip, go for a hike around and behind the ten waterfalls at Silver Creek Canyon in Silver Falls State Park. During the month of May, Cooley's Gardens or Schreiner's Iris Gardens are a spectacular sight, with acres and acres of blooming irises.
