Umatilla National Forest
The Umatilla National Forest, located in the Blue Mountains of southeast Washington and northeast Oregon, covers 1.4 million acres of diverse landscapes and plant communities. A wide variety of recreational opportunities are available on the Umatilla National Forest. Three classified wilderness and three national Wild and Scenic Rivers add their assets to the Forest.

Hiking In National Recreation Areas

Emigrant Springs State Heritage Area
This area provides many recreational activities for the visitor. Camping is available, but if camping doesn't suit a guest there are rustic cabins available for rent as well. Different trails let visitors explore the area whether it is on horseback or by foot. The area can be used as a base camp to see surrounding area attractions such as museums, trails, and other parks. Facilities are provided.

The North Fork Umatilla Wilderness, located 30 miles east of Pendleton, is the smallest wilderness in northeast Oregon. It encompasses only 20,144 acres in Umatilla and Union counties.

Oregon National Historic Trail
There are a number of ways to enjoy the Oregon National Historic Trail including auto-touring, visiting interpretive sites, hiking, biking or horseback riding trail segments and visiting museums. Depending on which segment visitors would like to explore, some or all of these activities may be available.

Medium Trails (4-8 miles)

Copple Butte Trail #3052
The end of Copple Butte Trail #3052 is only 1/2 mile west of Madison Butte and Madison Butte Lookout, which offers great views in all directions, including Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams on a clear day.

Lugar Springs - Eagle Ridge Trail #3232
Lugar Springs - Eagle Ridge Trail #3232 provides access to hunting, fishing, and camping. This trail is 4 miles with an elevation of 4700 feet to 4000 feet and is considered to be more difficult.

South Fork Desolation #3001
South Fork Desolation #3001 is located in a signed area with parking and dispersed camping located near the trailhead. This trail is 8.1 miles long with elevations of 5700 to 7400 feet and is considered to be more difficult.

Umatilla Rim Trail #3080
Umatilla Rim Trail #3080 is located on the North Fork of the Umatilla Wilderness area, this trail is open to foot and horse traffic only. This trail is 7.5 miles long with elevations of 2400 to 4450 feet and is considered to be most difficult.

Hells Half Acre Trail #3062
From Little Bald Mountain, the view is great to the north and south of Hells Half Acre Trail #3062. This trail is 2.5 miles with an elevation of 4300 feet to 5350 feet and is considered to be more difficult.

Squaw Creek Trail
Squaw Creek Trail is open to hikers and horses only. This trail is 1.5 miles long with elevations of 5100 to 5900 feet and is considered to be easy.

Whitman Route Overlook Trail #3095
Whitman Route Overlook Trail #3095 introduces an interpretive display on the Marcus and Narcissa Whitman route to their future mission located near Walla Walla, Washington.
