Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge

Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge provides a nesting area for Great Basin Canada geese and several species of ducks. There are usually about 90,000 wintering Canada geese. There are also about 200,000 wintering ducks, practically all species of ducks found in the west except sea ducks. The largest number of ducks on the refuge at one time was 458,000 on November 13, 1983. Long-billed curlews and other marsh and water birds nest on the refuge. Mammals include mule deer, coyote, and many smaller species. Walleye, steelhead, salmon, sturgeon, crappie, and bass are found in refuge waters. 29,370 acres of marshes, sloughs, open water, cropland, and sagebrush uplands.

Best Time To Visit: Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge office is open 8am - 4pm, Monday through Friday.

Directions:  To reach Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge from Kennewick start out going south on N Mayfield St. toward W Kennewick Ave. for 0.1 miles. Turn right onto W Kennewick Ave. for 1.0 miles. Turn left onto US-395 S. Continue to follow US-395 S. for 3.5 miles. Merge onto US-395 S toward Umatilla for 20.9 miles. Take the US-395 exit1 toward Umatilla for 0.1 miles. Keep right at the fork to go on US-730 for 12.1 miles. Turn right onto Patterson Ferry Rd. for 1.6 miles. Turn left onto Columbia Ln. for 1.8 miles. Warning: There are .92 miles between your ending location and the end of your driving directions. Use maps to get from your ending location to the end of your route. End at Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge.

To reach Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge from Pendleton start out going north on S Main St toward US-30 W. for 0.1 miles. Turn left onto US-30 W. Continue to follow Pendleton Hwy. for 0.7 miles. Pendleton Hwy. becomes OR-37 for 0.1 miles. Turn left onto OR-37 for 0.1 miles. Turn right onto OR-37 W. Continue to follow OR-37 W. for 0.1 miles. Merge onto I-84 W. for 41.0 miles. Take the US-730 exit- 168 toward Irrigon for 0.3 miles. Turn right onto US-730 for 3.7 miles. Turn left onto County Rd 930 for 1.6 miles. Turn left onto Columbia Ln. for 1.8 miles. End at Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge.
