Yellow Jacket Loop Trail #1522 goes southwest through high elevation timber types and open meadows to the ridge dividing the South Umpqua and North Umpqua River drainages. Wildlife can be seen in the meadows from June through July. It then turns east through timber and partially logged clearings to an area locally known as Dead Cow Lake. Turning north it returns to Hemlock Lake. This trail joins with Flat Rock Trail #1526 at milepoint 1.25 and Snowbird Shelter Trail #1517 at milepoint 4. Hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and dirt bikes are allowed on the trail. This trail is 8 miles long, has a more difficult rating, and receives moderate use.

Follow Road 17 for 20 miles, where it changes into Forest Road 27 and becomes a gravel surface. Follow Forest Road 27 for 12 miles to Forest Road 2700-495 which leads to Hemlock Lake Campground.
