W.B. Nelson State Recreation Site provides a small freshwater lake and fishing dock. Bass and stocked pan-sized trout are the most common fish. The area is known for abundant waterfowl. Adjacent to the Alsea River, there is a scenic wetland area. A free fishing day is held every year in May. Picnicking is popular and relaxing here. The areas overlook the Alsea River, and provide easy access to the river's shore. Sometimes the river current can be strong. Guests are advised to accompany small children in the water. Wildlife watching is abundant. Not only do the waterfowl make for excellent bird watching, but it is also not rare to find a doe and her fawn drinking from the riverside. Visitors are urged not to chase the animals. Water recreation is popular among visitors. Water skiing, jet skiing, boating, swimming, and tubing are all activities that visitors can be found participating in.
