The Twin Lakes Loop #602 trails rides north on Forest Road #6540 to a sharp turn south on Forest Road #6530, follow this road a very short distance to Forest Road #265 heading north. Travel approximately 1/2 mile to the road fork, take Forest Road #150 heading northeast for approximately 3 1/2 miles. Then turn on Forest Road #6510. Go up a very steep section through a lime quarry, to the Elkhorn Crest Trail #1611 trailhead. Travel on this trail to Twin Lake Trail #1633 (4 1/2 miles). Descend through steep switchbacks across an open talus slope. This section of the ride drops from 8200 to 7600 feet in one mile to Twin Lakes. From the lakes, follow the trail to the end where it changes to Forest Road #030. Travel on this road back to Deer Creek Campground. From the top, this loop offers beautiful views of the Baker Valley and the Wallowa Mountains in the distance. Mountain goats are often seen in their haunts on the ridge west of the Twin Lakes basin. This trail is 17 miles with elevations of 4400 to 8200 feet and is considered to be most difficult.
