Summit Lake #1635 ascends 1000 feet in the first three miles and then follows Elkhorn Ridge for 5.5 miles to Cracker Creek Saddle. At the saddle, cross the road and continue approximately 1/8 mile southeast to the Summit Lake trail #1635 junction. The trail traverses a north-facing slope and provides views of the North Powder River valley. Summit Lake is cradled by sheer rock walls on three sides, offering an extremely high quality alpine experience. Scattered camping sites exist throughout the basin. The secondary access roads to Summit Lake Trail are from North Powder River and Cracker Creek roads and are suitable for 4-wheel drive vehicles and trail bikes only. From the North Powder River Road trailhead to the lake, the 1.3 miles of trail are steep and difficult, gaining an elevation of 1,000 feet. This trail is considered to easy to most difficult.
