Summer Lake

Summer Lake, located in Oregon's south-central high desert region, is a moody sort of lake, more reflective than dynamic; its character determined by the surrounding valley and dramatic weather changes. - and lately, the whim of Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW). Once rarely waterless, Summer Lake has been totally dry by mid-summer for the past 11 years, except for the three years following a confrontation in the spring of 1997 between Summer Lake residents and ODFW. The dry lake creates toxic clouds of alkali dust gusting off the scorched alkali lake bed. Besides being unnatural and unhealthy, the dry lake bed creates perfect conditions for catastrophic fires and severe wildlife stress. To reverse this man-made disaster, many residents and friends have joined together to protect the lake and its environment from bureaucratic bungling.
