| Smelt Sands State Recreation Site is an excellent whale watching and photography viewpoint. Visitors are encouraged to walk the historic 804 Trail. It extends for .75 miles one-way with resting benches scattered along the way. The park is known for tide pooling, rock fishing and the yearly smelt run. Breathtaking sunsets are signature attractions for this site as well. Picnic tables are available throughout this site. While sitting from the picnic areas there is a lot of opportunity to catch a glimpse of the famous wildlife of Oregon. Eagles can be spotted overhead; while whales and sea lions can be spotted in the ocean just feet away! Fishing for smelt is not the only catch of the day. The bigger fish of the deep sea are popular as well when visitors decide to take their boats out for a day. Beach access is easy to get to through a walking trail that leads from the parking lot. Water activities in the ocean include, but are not limited to, surfing, wind surfing, sailing, wake boarding, boogie boarding, and jet skiing. This is a good day area. |
