Prineville Reservoir and Arthur R. Bowman Dam are features of the Crooked River Project. Recreation at the 3,030-acre reservoir is located 15 miles south of Prineville. Available species of fish include largemouth and smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, brown bullhead, and crappie. The fishing season of this reservoir is open year-round. Reservoir acre feet and total reservoir capacity and cubic feet/second release rates for rivers below the Deschutes River Basin reservoirs and select river locations are updated daily and graphically provided. Many visitors are able to relax at the reservoir as well. Boating is permitted, along with many other water activities. Such activities include water skiing, jet skiing, canoeing, power boating, and swimming. The management of this area simply asks that all visitors remain aware of the safety zones in the reservoir. There are designated safe swimming areas and safe boating areas.
