Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint is set in the dunes of the southern Oregon coast. The river supposedly got its name when a militia soldier lost his pistol in the river during the infamous Rogue River Indian War. In March of 1856, a decisive battle was fought here. The dunes and the river system that feeds them are what make this area unique. During the spring and summer months, the dunes actually grow. The river has changed its course numerous times in recent history and pothole ponds attract waterfowl and shorebirds. This is an excellent birding spot. Ocean windsurfing is so good here national championships have been held here three years in a row. The beaches and sea stacks are wonderful. Picnicking in the area is a popular recreation among larger group get-togethers as well. Group shelters are not provided. The marine mammal watching is abundant as well. The famous gray whales migrate up and down this shoreline, but so do humpback and blue whales! Sea lions have often been spotted playing in this area as well. Guests are advised not to go near the wild animals, for their safety and the safety of the visitors. Many people bring their boats to participate in the many water activities of the ocean. These include surfing, wake boarding, wind surfing, and boogie boarding. Deep sea fishing is popular as well. A horse trail begins just a few feet from the chilly waters of the Pacific and goes back into a thick forest. Only ten horses are allowed on the trail at one time.
