Nehalem Bay State Park is a park where many visitors find the serenity of the area to be the most attractive feature. If guests look closer they will find a lot of ways to keep busy. Crabbing and fishing on Nehalem Bay are popular. For a breathtaking view of the bay, fitness and wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the 1.75 mile bike trail that circles the park airplane landing strip. Along this route and in the campground itself, visitors are likely to see deer grazing, a herd of elk, or a coyote crossing the road. The park is also graced with a variety of birds. Fine dining and local boutiques in the neighboring communities of Manzanita and Nehalem offer a change of scenery from the park setting. Afternoon or moonlit walks on the beach and down to the end of the jetty enhance the serenity of this park. Trees include Spruce Cedar Hemlock Douglas Fir Shore Pine Alder Visitors will also find: Salal Huckelberries Rhododendrons Blackberries Elderberry Wild strawberries Salmon Berries A large variety of mushrooms Coastal rivers include: Coho Chum Pink Salmon Steelhead Chinook Cutthroat trout At Oswald West State Park there are 2 trails down to this cove area. the one to the south serves the overnight camping area. The north trail has a river you follow to the beach. These trails are well surfaced and easy to travel for all ages. Bring your swim suits. There is a perfect place to body & board surf at this beach. There is also a pond for youngsters to go wading in. There are other trails towards the north that take off in many directions. I will have more on these trails later as I have time to take these paths.
