LaPine State Park is the place to go if visitors want to immerse themselves in a sub-alpine forest where the air has that high-Cascades tang; to stay in a clean, quiet campground next to a twisting, cold river brimming with trout (and a nearby legendary fly fishing spot) and surrounded by miles of waiting-to-be-explored wilderness; to sit smack in the middle of dozens of high-mountain lakes (in winter, near some of the best ski-spots in the land); to see eagles or red-tailed hawks grabbing breakfast right in front of visitors; or, to just sit in a campsite pondering what guests might do tomorrow ...this recreation area is important to the enjoyment of the Deschutes River because the arguably most popular section of the river to float is the eight miles from Pringle Falls to LaPine State Park. Conversely, the river is important to enjoyment of the park because floaters can also enjoy a leisurely ride from the park to about sixteen miles downstream: the river flows about two miles per hour and passes along inaccessible stretches of peaceful forests and meadows. Hiking trails are available in the area as well.
