The former Jackson County courthouse now serves as home to the Jacksonville Museum . Made of brick and stone in the Italianate style, the two-story edifice was proclaimed "the crowning glory of Jacksonville." Jacksonville was not a typical "Gold Rush" town. It did not go from rags to riches, but it certainly gave early promise of fame and fortune, as gold mining was the reason for its founding and the basis of its early prosperity. However, fame and fortune soon escaped the small settlement that had its beginning in the 1850s when the county seat moved to Medford in 1926. The museum is to make history come alive by collecting, preserving, and sharing the stories and artifacts of our common heritage.
