Illinois River Forks State Park is used for a picnic area at this day-use park. Located at the confluence of the east and west forks of the Illinois River, the park offers picnic tables and restrooms. There is a short walking trail near the picnic area. The Illinois Valley is a unique geologic area with many rare plants. Visit here to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Raft trips are available on the wild and scenic Illinois River. Fishing and swimming also are popular on the river. The park is situated on 511 acres just south of Cave Junction. Botanists will enjoy the Eight Dollar Mountain Botanical Area, which can be reached by turning west off Highway 199 on the road marked Kalmiopsis Wilderness area. If visitors decide to go on a rafting trip find it is not unusual to spot playful otter in the Illinois River. Elk tend to wander near the lake for a drink of cold running water. Fish caught in the river are mainly salmon and trout. There is a free fishing contest held once a year. During this competition there are no limits on what size fish can be kept. Anything is fair game for this annual contest.
