Governor Patterson Memorial State Recreation Site is a beachcomber's delight. There are miles of flat, sandy beach and just a short hike from the mouth of Alsea Bay is where visitors can windsurf, crab, or just watch the seals. Not only is crabbing very fruitful, but fishing on the shoreline proves to pay off as well. Excellent whale and storm watching opportunities arise in this area. Sunsets are beautiful here and it's a great place to take photos. Birds migrating from Canada in the migrating months swarm to this area before flying south for the winter. It makes sense that this area is an incredible place to bird watch for hours on end. The beach provides visitors with a great view of the Pacific Ocean. Volleyball courts and other summer recreation areas scattered along the shore are closed off for the winter due to extremely cold temperatures.
