D River State Recreation Site is where the shortest river in the world is located. The D River flows a mere 120 feet from Devils Lake into the roaring ocean. The park is off the highway with easy access to a busy -- and reliably windy --beach. D River Wayside is home to a pair of the world's largest kite festivals every spring and fall which gives Lincoln City the name Kite Capital of the World. Not only do visitors come to participate in the kite festivals every year. They also come for the exceptional fishing that is available at the beach; only 120 miles away. A fishing dock is provided on the river banks itself as well. The recreation area management has set up a designated wildlife viewing area. Visitors are able to see the migratory birds that nest near the D River. Deer and elk are common sites as well. Finally, this area is open to visitors who want to camp on the river's banks. Reservations for a campsite are required since there is limited space.
