| Detroit Lake Located in the rugged mountain forests below Mt. Jefferson, Detroit Lake is stored water from the Santiam River. Detroit Dam rises 463 feet above its foundation in the narrow, steep and rocky slopes of the North Santiam Canyon. The dam provides controlled runoff, flood control, irrigation, downstream navigation improvement, recreation opportunities and power generation, while preserving the quality of the Valley's environment. Campsites are available to all the visitors of Detroit Lake. Rainbow trout are stocked in the lake. There is no natural reproduction in the lake, but if the fish survive for three or four years they can weigh over five pounds! Waterfowl migrate here in abundance. This makes for prime game during the hunting season. All visitors are required to have permits for fishing and hunting. |
