Chickahominy Reservoir is a 500-acre irrigation reservoir smack in the middle of the sagebrush flats of eastern Oregon. It has one redeeming factor for anglers-big rainbow trout, or at least the distinct possibility. Chickahominy Reservoir is stocked with fingerling rainbow trout each year, and if they survive three years or so (there is no natural reproduction here) they may reach 3 to 4 pounds and be in excess of 20 inches. Average fish are in the 16- to 18-inch range. There is primitive camping available here, and a fish cleaning station and boat ramp are on the south end of the lake. Chickahominy Reservoir is open to angling year-round with bait, lures, and flies. The lake sits in the wide open and is exposed to harsh wind. As a matter of fact the wind blows nearly everyday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. When visitors fish this lake it is best to be moving before daylight and fish the calm of the morning. Chickahominy has a very strong food chain. Leeches seem to predominate in the early season diet, but Water Boatmen and Chironomids are also very important. Chironomid hatches frequently come off in the very early morning. All manner of floating devices work well on this lake. There are enough surface acres that a boat is handy. Float tubes and pontoon boats fish well in this lake until the wind comes up. Hiking and wading is also very productive.
