Alderwood State Wayside is a forested tract along Hwy 36 west of Junction City. There is a picnic area and short trail along the Long Tom River. Visitors often like to bring a lunch and relax! The short trail is a part of a trail system throughout the area. The easiest hiking trail starts at the beginning of the system, but as each trail becomes intertwined with one another they become more difficult. Beginning hikers are not advised to hike the system alone. Fishing for rainbow trout is very popular in the Long Tom River. Fishing is only permitted from the banks of the river, because the footbridge is not accessible. The footbridge was severely damaged by a fire in February, and remains inaccessible. Facilities are available as well.
