Agate Beach State Recreation Area is also known as a surfers paradise. The waves on the beach are not to rough. All levels of surfers, wake boarders, and body surfers are invited to put their skills to use in the water. If visitors plan to visit prime Newport attractions like the Oregon Coast Aquarium and Hatfield Marine Science Center, they must stop in for a refreshing picnic at Agate Beach. A tunnel leads to the ocean beach and day-use area. If visitors walk through this tunnel, they might imagine Newport farmers many years ago leading cattle westward through this tunnel to the ocean salt. The Agate Beach is known for prize fishing as well. Contests are held throughout the year to determine who has caught a trophy worthy fish. The competitions offer different rewards, but the people who are fishing usually just enjoy the sport.
