South Loop Trail is 8 1/3 miles one way. The South Loop Trail makes a steep ascent from the Cathedral Rock Trailhead area. As it winds toward Echo Canyon, the trail traverses an avalanche chute lined with quaking aspen.
After hiking 4 miles the junction for Griffith Peak Trail is reached. The trail then begins a gradual climb through a meadow area. At the 6 mile mark, the trail approaches timberline, leaving the bristlecone forest behind. The final ascent is a strenuous 1/2 mile climb that rewards hikers with a breathtaking view from Charleston Peak summit.
