Taos lies at the foot of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains of the Rocky Mountain Range. The ancient pueblo of Taos may be the oldest continuously occupied community in the country. This area was settled by the Spaniards in the 1700's, and has been the site of much local history.

Taos has been a major "art colony" since 1898. Numerous art galleries and museums surround the plaza, and the natural beauty of the area continue to attract artists, as well as campers, hikers, and tourists. There are many local museums, including the Kit Carson home, the Charles Bent House where Governor Bent was murdered, and the Millicent Rogers museum, displaying American and Hispanic art.
