| With a warm and arid climate, Raton is the gateway to the Rockies, and is surrounded by some fantastic scenery. Nearby peaks rise to nearly 14,000 feet, and high mountain lakes and streams boast great fishing.Local attractions include the nearby Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge, Sugarite Canyon State Park, Fort Union National Monument, and a local golf course. Five blocks of Raton's business district have been designated the Raton Downtown History District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1977. A walking tour of the area includes such sites as the old Wells Fargo Express Company building, the former Gem Saloon, and the European Rococo style Shuler Theater, which housed the local opera house. |
