| The warm and arid town of Socorro, whose name means "help" or "aid" in Spanish, dates back to the founding of the first San Miguel Mission in the early 1600's.A self-guided tour through the historic section of town features the San Miguel Mission, as well as Kittrell Park, the Garcia Opera House, Juan Jose Baca House, and the Valverde Hotel, among other sites. The 57,191 acres of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge offer the opportunity to observe hundreds of species of wildlife, from mule deer to porcupines to rattlesnakes, and include a small population of rare and endangered sand hill cranes.Other attractions include the nearby Gila and Cibola National Forests, historic Fort Craig and Ghost Town, historic missions and pueblos, and an 18-hole golf course. |
