The Wheeler Peak Wilderness includes almost 20,000 acres. Lying along the top of the Sangre De Cristo mountain range Wheeler Peak Wilderness is characterized by high rugged terrain. Elevations range from a low of 7,650 feet to a high of 13,161 feet at Wheeler Peak, the highest point in the State of New Mexico.
Marmots, pikas, elk, mule deer, and golden eagles all call this wilderness home. There are several small lakes and streams in this area, creating opportunities for fishing. From the cottonwoods along the Rio Hondo to the bristlecone pines guarding the peaks, Wheeler Peak Wilderness has almost all of the trees native to Northern New Mexico. Englemann spruce and sub-alpine fir are the predominant tree species.
