South Fork Bonito is located within the Lincoln National Forest. This stream is able to produce decent flows under the driest conditions. Brook trout and rainbow trout are the most popular fish caught from the South Fork Bonito.


Facilities: South Fork Bonito provides 60 individual campsites along with drinking water, flush toilets, fire grills, and picnic tables.

Best Time To Visit: Fishing from South Fork Bonito is best during spring, summer, and fall.

Rules: This area is located within the Lincoln National Forest; forest regulations apply.

Directions: To reach South Fork Bonito from Roswell, take I-70 southwest to Highway 48 to Ruidoso. Take Highway 48 north out of Ruidoso for nine miles to Highway 37. Turn left onto Highway 37 and proceed to Forest Service 107. Turn left and follow Forest Service to the South Fork Campground turn off. Turn left and follow this road into the upper parking area. Forest Service Trail 19 starts there and follows the tributary for 6.0 miles.

To reach South Fork Bonito from Alomagordo, take I-82/70 north to Ruidoso. Then follow the directions from Roswell.
