| With three peaks over 12,500 feet in elevation Latir Peak Wilderness, spectacular and relatively seldom seen area contains New Mexico high country at its very finest including a portion of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Here is a land of lakes and streams, deep forest cover broken by pleasant meadows, and subalpine and alpine tundra on the Latir Mesa in the northern portion.An abundance of southern Rocky Mountain wildlife includes mule deer, black bear, badger, beaver, bobcat, coyote, ferret, fox, mountain lion, marmot, marten, mouse and muskrat. Most of the area's water drains into the Lake Fork of Cabresto Creek which originates in heart-shaped Heart Lake at 11,520 feet above sea level.Of the main trails, Lake Fork Trail from Cabresto Lake to Heart Lake, five miles long, receives the most use. Continue five miles past Heart Lake to enter the magnificent country of Latir Peak itself and the alpine mesas. Water is abundant. |
