| The Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway road is a picturesque and unique drive through some of the most scenic, as well as historical, territory in the United States. Small towns and communities dot the byway; however, much of the landscape remains in its natural state. From stately mountains, cliffs and canyons, to a large lake, national forest, and grand river, the byway travels through a blend of terrains. The history of the area begins with the prehistoric Mimbres culture which settled in the area about 12,000 years ago. The Apaches, with their famed warrior Geronimo, lived in the Warm Springs area, part of which is located near the northern section of the byway. Spaniards, Hispanic farmers, miners, cowboys, and ranchers lived and worked in the area that is now called the Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway. This combination of cultures makes the byway an exciting look at different cultures and their impact on the area. While the early history of the area may have consisted of a lot of work, the area is now rich in recreational opportunities. Paramount along the Gernonimo Trail Scenic Byway is Elephant Butte Lake, the largest lake in New Mexico. Boating, fishing, and other water sports are the favorite activities at Elephant Butte Lake State Park, as well as at Caballo Lake State Park. The Rio Grande is also a popular spot for fishing. Biking, hiking, and camping are available along the byway, and there are many recreational opportunities to be found in the Gila National Forest. |
