Elephant Butte Reservoir, created by a dam constructed in 1916 across the Rio Grande, is 40 miles long with more than 200 miles of shoreline. Although constructed to provide for irrigation and flood control, the lake is New Mexico's premier water recreation facility. A wide variety of water sports are available at the lake, with fishing being one of the most popular. The mild climate of the area makes this park a popular year-round destination.

Facilities: The Elephant Butte Lake State Park provides 200 RV campsites, an unlimited number of tent sites, picnic areas, visitor center, group shelter and restrooms.

Reservations: Reservations are needed for some of the campsites at Elephant Butte Reservoir.

Best Time To Visit: Elephant Butte Reservoir is open year round.

Fees: There is a day usage, and an overnight fee at Elephant Butte Reservoir.

Accessibility: The restrooms and showers are both handicapped accessible at Elephant Butte Reservoir.

Rules: Know all park rules and regulations, which are posted in the park. Drive only on designated roadways and obey posted speed limits. Camp only in the designated areas. Keep pets on leashes. (It is a good idea to have proof of current rabies immunizations when traveling with pets in New Mexico since it is required by law in some of the state's recreation areas.) Do not feed the wildlife. Be aware that vandalizing, defacing, or removing antiquities, minerals, plants or wildlife is absolutely prohibited. Bring your own firewood since none is available in the park. Bring and drink ample water, at least one gallon per day per person, and allow for the extreme heat of the desert in the summer.

Directions: Elephant Butte Lake State Park headquarters are five miles north of Truth or Consequences via I-25 exit 83.
