Located in New Mexico's northern mountains, El Vado Lake State Park offers fishing, boating, water skiing, and winter cross-country skiing. A 5.5-mile scenic trail along the Rio Chama connects El Vado with nearby Heron Lake.
Quiet coves around the lake are great places to catch trout and kokonee salmon or just to get away from it all. The lake and surrounding area are a major wintering ground for bald eagles and other birds such as red-tailed hawks, water ouzels, and ospreys.
There are 25 widely scattered picnic or camping shelters and one large group shelter. There is a total of 80 developed sites, a modern comfort station with showers and a dozen vault toilets, plus 19 electric sites with water and a new playground.
