A major feature of the Glenwood District is the historically intriguing Catwalk National Recreation Area.
The area offers a beautiful picnic spot next to Whitewater Creek, a challenging one mile trail along the historic water line route from the 1890's, a trailhead access into the Gila Wilderness, a bird watcher's paradise and a sense of place that creates images of an earlier time.
The newly constructed trail on the south side of Whitewater Creek opens up a whole new view of the canyon never really seen by humans before and is designed so that people of all abilities can experience it.
The grade on the new universally designed trail is 8.33%, with a surface coating called 'natural pave' that makes for a smooth walk. The new trail reveals iron bolts installed by miners in the early 1900's that are embedded in the canyon walls.
