| Caballo Lake State Park sits at an elevation of 4,100 feet and covers 5,300 acres of land in addition to the lake. Park amenities include a visitor center, group picnic shelter, a playground, restrooms, and showers. Camping facilities include 136 developed sites, 64 with electrical hookup, and a RV dump station.This park's claims to fame are the majestic Bald and Golden Eagles that migrate through, beginning in late October. Numerous Golden Eagles nest in the nearby Caballo foothills, while Bald Eagles will nest in large areas around the park, as well as within the park.The area is home to largemouth bass, walleye, white bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, northern pike, sunfish, and an occasional rainbow trout. Best fishing is late April through August.Visitors can stroll among yuccas, century plants, ocotillos, cow tongues, prickly pears, and other desert cacti growing in the park's two cacti gardens. Most of these cactus provide beautiful blooms in late March and early April. |

Reservations: Some of the campsites at Caballo Lake State Park do require reservations. Best Time To Visit: Caballo Lake State Park is open year round. Fees: Day usage and overnight camping fees do apply. Accessibility: The restrooms, showers, group picnic area, and playground are handicapped accessible. Rules: Know all park rules and regulations, which are posted in the park. Drive only on designated roadways and obey posted speed limits. Camp only in the designated areas. Keep pets on leashes. (It is a good idea to have proof of current rabies immunizations when traveling with pets in New Mexico since it is required by law in some of the state's recreation areas.) Do not feed the wildlife. Be aware that vandalizing, defacing, or removing antiquities, minerals, plants or wildlife is absolutely prohibited. Bring your own firewood since none is available in the park. Bring and drink ample water, at least one gallon per day per person, and allow for the extreme heat of the desert in the summer.
