Pirogue Island State Park Picnic Area is isolated and shaded by cottonwood trees, this is a Yellowstone River island that offers visitors an excellent spot to view wildlife and to hunt for moss agates. Because this rich riparian area contains abundant water and plant life, it provides the perfect habitat for a variety of wildlife. The site is a haven for waterfowl, bald eagles, fox squirrels, and whitetail and mule deer.
Captain William Clark and his men, Sacagawea and baby Pomp, are believed to have camped on Pirogue Island on their return trip east to St. Louis on July 29, 1806. Interpretive signs in the park discuss the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery and more history of this island.
The island can be accessed by floating or, during low water, by foot through a small channel.
This is a beautiful day use picnic area that does not charge a fee and does not require reservations. It is located off the banks of the Yellowstone River.
There are lots of wonderful fishing opportunities in the nearby Yellowstone River but be sure to have a proper and valid Montana fishing license before casting in your line.
There are lots of wonderful hiking trails in the area which makes this the perfect place for any nature enthusiast who is interested in nature and scenery viewing.


Facilities: Pirogue Island State Park Picnic Area has vault toilets but no water, guests are advised to bring their own, and no garbage so please pack out whatever you pack in.

Best Time To Visit: Pirogue Island State Park Picnic Area is open year round but the best time to visit is between the early spring and the late summer.

Fees: Pirogue Island State Park Picnic Area does not charge any fees.

Accessibility: Pirogue Island State Park Picnic Area is completely handicapped accessible.

Rules: While at Pirogue Island State Park Picnic Area all pets must be on a leash and remember to clean up after yourself.

Directions: To get to Pirogue Island State Park Picnic Area from Miles City, take MT-59 northTurn right at Mountain Highway 489. Destination will be on the right.
