| Mud Lake is a shallow lake that averages only 5 feet deep. It is bordered by salt grass, bulrush-cattail stands, and willows. Tall sagebrush desert, farmland and pastures surround the lake area, an important spring water bird stop-over.You can drive Mud Lake's roads, launch small boats into the lake or walk out on several points jutting into the water. Maps and bird checklists are available at the headquarters of the lake. A viewing platform is strategically placed near nesting water birds. March through April is an excellent time to see snow and Canada geese, tundra and trumpeter swans and many duck species. Spring visitors include the American white pelican, Clark's and Western grebe, common loon, black-crowned night heron, white-faced ibis, snowy egret, black tern and double-crested cormorant. |
