Lower Salmon River

Lower Salmon River drops out of the forest near Riggins into a narrow basalt gorge that squeezes the river runner for miles. Then, the landscape opens up to grassy palisades until the Salmon joins the Snake at Hells Canyon on the Idaho-Oregon border.
Discover and explore old homesteads, Chinese mining claims, and Nezperce Indian sites, accessible only by water. Whitewater boating is the primary activity here with trips ranging from a half-day to five-day excursions through a remote canyon. The diverse geology provides habitat for an abundance of wildlife such as deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and hundreds of birds including many raptors and song birds. A "Wild and Scenic" designation is pending for the Lower Salmon.
