Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located at the marshy north shore of Bear Lake. It represents an important nesting area for white-faced ibis, Canada geese and redhead ducks. Also in the area are sandhill cranes, ducks and a variety of songbirds. Boating and canoeing are allowed with date restrictions and hunting is allowed during the state open season only. Mule deer are common in winter and Nordic skiing is allowed. Visitors can pick up information at the refuge headquarters in Montpelier.
