Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located at the marshy north shore of Bear Lake. It represents an important nesting area for white-faced ibis, Canada geese and redhead ducks. Also in the area are sandhill cranes, ducks and a variety of songbirds. Boating and canoeing are allowed with date restrictions and hunting is allowed during the state open season only. Mule deer are common in winter and Nordic skiing is allowed. Visitors can pick up information at the refuge headquarters in Montpelier.

Facilities: Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge provides boating facilities, parking, and vault toilets.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted for Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

Rules: There are date restrictions for canoeing and boating. Hunting is allowed during the state open season only.

Directions: To reach Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge from Montpelier, drive 3 miles west on US Highway 89. Turn south on the graveled Bear Lake County Airport Road. Drive 5 miles to the north entrance of the refuge.
