Lihue is the county seat of Kauai, as well as the center for business and transportation. Here you can explore Kauai Museum and tour extensive exhibits of tapa, early Hawaiian artistry, and memorabilia from the sugar plantation era. It's also a great spot for recreation. Beautiful Kalapaki Beach is a great spot for swimming and sunning. And nearby is Kauai Lagoons, which hosts two Jack Nicklaus-designed 18-hole golf courses and forty acres of freshwater lagoons.
