Ups and Downs of Mauna Loa

Ups and Downs of Mauna Loa climbs 2600 feet (790 m) up the slopes of Mauna Loa volcano, through koa woodlands, and over prehistoric lava flows. The road ends at 6,662 feet (2031 m) elevation where, weather permitting, visitors will be rewarded with a panoramic view of Kilauea.
A gated road spur on Crater Rim Drive between KMC and Kilauea Overlook provides a shortcut to Mauna Loa Road. Parking is available at Kipuka Puaulu, 1.3 miles (2 km) up Mauna Loa Road. This road may be closed to most cars during times of high fire danger.

Facilities: Toilets but no water are located at Kipuka Puaulu picnic ground and at the end of Ups and Downs of Mauna Loa.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted for Ups and Downs of Mauna Loa.

Best Time To Visit: Ups and Downs of Mauna Loa is open year round.

Fees: No fees are charged.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Watch your speed as you descend the narrow curvy road as cars often cut blind corners and it is difficult to negotiate hairpin turns at high speed.

Directions: Ups and Downs of Mauna Loa is located within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

To reach Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Kailua-Kona, drive southeast for about 96 on HWY 11 (2 to 2 1/2 hour drive).
To reach Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Hilo, take Hwy 11. The park is 30 miles from Hilo (45 minute drive).
