Summit to Sea

Summit to Sea descends 3,700 feet (1128 m) through remnants of native forest, across vast lava flows from the eruption of Mauna Ulu, to the coastal plains. The road ends at the 2001 lava flows.

Facilities: A toilet, but no water is available at the end of Summit to Sea and at Mauna Ulu parking area.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted for Summit to Sea.

Best Time To Visit: Summit to Sea is open year round.

Fees: No fees are charged.

Accessibility: Unknown

Rules: Be aware of gusty winds and volcanic air pollution along the Chain of Craters Road. Ascent is challenging because it is hot, windy, and steep; consider arranging transportation back up.

Directions: Summit to Sea is located within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

To reach Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Kailua-Kona, drive southeast for about 96 on HWY 11 (2 to 2 1/2 hour drive).
To reach Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Hilo, take Hwy 11. The park is 30 miles from Hilo (45 minute drive).
