Puu Huluhulu Trail

Puu Huluhulu Trail allows visitors to cross 1973 and 1974 lava flows, through kipuka, past lava trees, and climb 150 feet to the summit of Puu Huluhulu. On a clear day Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, Puu Oo and the Pacific Ocean are visible. Visitors can enjoy Pahoehoe lava, kipuka, lava trees, cinder cone, lava shield, pioneer plants, and panoramic vista.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted for Puu Huluhulu Trail.

Best Time To Visit: Puu Huluhulu Trail is open year round.

Fees: No fees are charged.

Accessibility: This trail is not handicap accessible.

Rules: Bring water. Prepare for hot and dry or wet and windy weather. Follow the ahu (rock piles) over the lava flows. Sulfur fumes may be strong on some days.

Directions: Puu Huluhulu Trail is located within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

To reach Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Kailua-Kona, drive southeast for about 96 on HWY 11 (2 to 2 1/2 hour drive).
To reach Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Hilo, take Hwy 11. The park is 30 miles from Hilo (45 minute drive).
