Halemaumau Trail

Halemaumau Trail descends 400 feet through rain forest to the caldera floor, where it crosses Kilauea Caldera to Halemaumau Crater. This trail leads to the southern edge of the caldera where it joins the Crater Rim Trail. Visitors can enjoy plants, birds, insects, pahoehoe lava flows, steam vents, spatter ramparts, crater, and caldera.

Reservations: Reservations are not needed or accepted for Halemaumau Trail.

Best Time To Visit: Halemaumau Trail is open year round.

Fees: No fees are charged.

Accessibility: This trail is not handicap accessible.

Rules: Bring water and food. Prepare for hot, dry, wet, and windy weather. Beware of sulfur fumes; people with heart and breathing problems should avoid this trail.

Directions: Halemaumau Trail is located within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

To reach Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Kailua-Kona, drive southeast for about 96 on HWY 11 (2 to 2 1/2 hour drive).
To reach Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Hilo, take Hwy 11. The park is 30 miles from Hilo (45 minute drive).
